Actions approved during Spring 2003:

Elementary Planned Program

Option I: a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science in an approved major

1) One academic major from the list below

2) All courses in the Elementary Planned Program where that course content is not included in the minors

Rules 3-6 continue as before

Option II: a bachelor of science degree in elementary education

1)  Two academic minors

2)  All courses in the Elementary Planned Program where that course content is not included in the minors.

Rules 3-6 continue as before

Note: students are advised to carefully consider the selection of major and minors to optimize the overlap of content between the major/minors and the requirements of the Elementary Planned Program.  Credits used to obtain one major/minor cannot be used to obtain another major/minor.

  1. Modify the course descriptions for TE150 Reflections on Teaching and Learning to indicate prerequisites: “successful completion (grade of C- or better) or placement beyond both SA091 and EN091”
  2. Increased credits in TE 491/492 to 8 semester hours and added TE480
  3. Deleted PS160 Canadian Government option, all students take PS110 American Government

Things to watch for:

1.      First Aid and CPR required for all teachers recommended for certification after July 1, 2004

2.      Secondary teachers will no longer be required to pass the MTTC and qualify for an endorsement in their minor field.  They must continue to complete approved academic majors and minors in approved fields as a condition of graduation.

3.      MDE may issue revised guidelines regarding group endorsements in science, possibly allowing that preparation with the old DX or new DI Integrated Science majors will satisfy the requirements for HQ under NCLB

4.      Secondary endorsements are being reviewed for possible revision to cover grades 6-12

5.      MDE is expected to issue new guidelines following a meeting in April to restrict the academic fields useable for the initial preparation of elementary teachers to those fields directly related to the Michigan core curriculum (EPP topics)
