SUMMER 2008

EDUC 612 – Philosophical Foundations of Education    updated 001                           (4 credits)
Examines the philosophical underpinnings of education through study of individuals such as John Dewey, Paulo Friere, and Maxine Greene.  Research on the philosophical perspectives of education, the role of teachers and learners in education, and on applying a philosophical framework to contemporary educational issues.  Prerequisites: Admission to MA:C&I program or permission of instructor.

EDUC 631 – Teaching Language Arts (topic)    (2 credits )
Course Description
Courses in English, Speech, and Language to meet the individual’s professional development goals through study to increase content knowledge and skills.  Students complete the course requirements of an approved undergraduate course at the 300 level or above.  In addition, the student will develop three research-based thematic teaching units based on the content of the class appropriate to the grade level of their teaching certificate/endorsements (K-12), and/or a research project or paper as  determined by the instructor. Prerequisite: admission to the MA:C&I program or approval of instructor; approved plan of study; and co-requisite of concurrent enrollment in approved 300/400 level course.

EDUC  632  - Teaching Mathematics (topic)      (2 credits)
Course Description
 - Courses in Mathematics and Computer Science to meet the individual’s professional development goals through study to increase content knowledge and skills. Students complete the course requirement of an approved undergraduate course at the 300 level or above. In addition the student will develop three research-based thematic teaching units based on the content of the class appropriate to the grade level of their teaching certificate/endorsements (K-12), and/or a research project or paper as determined by the instructor. Prerequisite: admission to the MA:C&I program or approval of instructor; approved plan of study; and co-requisite of concurrent enrollment in approved 300/400 level course.

EDUC 633Teaching Science (topic)          (2 credits)
Course Description
 - Courses in Life, Physical, and Earth/Space Sciences to meet the individual’s professional development goals through study to increase content knowledge and skills. Students complete the course requirements of an approved undergraduate course at the 300 level or above. In addition, the student will develop three research-based thematic teaching units based on the content of the class appropriate to the grade level of their teaching certificate/endorsements (K-12), and/or a research project or paper as determined by the instructor. Prerequisite: admission to the MA:C&I program or approval of instructor; approved plan of study; and co-requisite of concurrent enrollment in approved 300/400 level course.

EDUC 634  - Teaching Social Studies (topic)  (2 credits) 
Course Description  - Courses in History, Geography, Political Science and Economics to meet the individual’s professional development goals through study to increase content knowledge and skills. Students complete the course requirements of an approved undergraduate course at the 300 level or above.  In addition, the student will develop three research-based thematic units based on the content of the class appropriate to the grade level of their teaching certificate/endorsements (K-12), and/or a research project or paper as determined by the instructor.
 Prerequisite: admission to the MA:C&I program or approval of instructor; approved plan of study; and co-requisite of concurrent enrollment in approved 300/400 level course.

NOTE: EDUC695 will become a FALL semester course effective Fall 2008, please plan your courses to complete EDUC604 in the academic year PRIOR to registering for EDUC695.

EDUC 695  - Capstone Research Project                                                             (3 credits)
Course Description
– Development of a research-based curricular project that is integrated, responsive to student needs, and aligned with recommended curriculum and assessment frameworks.  EDUC 629 – Issues in Special Education                                                                   ( 3 credits)
Course Description
–  Contemporary issues in education of students with special needs; assessment, identification, and service delivery models; instructional and social/emotional considerations; parent and professional relationships; research priorities; and transition to employment. Prerequisites: Admission to MA:C&I program or permission of instructor.

Course Objectives –  Learners will be able to:
  • discuss issues in special education
  • research/present an issue in special education for discussion
  • research techniques for addressing instruction of students with special needs
  • develop and adapt curriculum units to address learner diversity

 EDUC 626 - Assessment and Measurement                                                             (3 credits)
Course Description
– Principles and practices in evaluation and measurement, reliability, validity; information and format strategies; performance assessment. Innovations in educational assessment and accountability as well as teacher-made tests will be examined. Prerequisites: Admission to MA:C&I program or permission of instructor.

Course Objectives Learners will be able to:
·         discuss testing and assessment and the related aspects of high-stakes testing
·         state the purposes of testing, including what and how to measure
·         compare and contrast norm- and criterion-referenced tests and their validity
·         create and evaluate test items for a variety of test formats, including objective and essay tests
·         examine test items for reliability and validity
·         compare alternate sources of assessment, including journals, portfolios, etc.
·         examine the use of standardized tests and interpret standardized test outcomes

EDUC 602  Reflection and Inquiry into Teaching Practices I (3, 0) 3
 Qualitative and quantitative research methods on teaching and learning.  Criteria for judging validity and applicability of research-based knowledge.  Framing educational problems worthy of inquiry.  Designing and assessing studies of teaching practice Prerequisites: Admission to Student Teaching Internship with co-requisites of EDUC480 and EDUC492.  Alternate prerequisite: admission to MA:C&I program, or permission of instructor.

EDUC 627 – Models of Teaching (3,0) 3 updated 001
Models of teaching are designs for instruction developed to support particular types of learning.  In this course, students will examine the theoretical and research bases of various models of teaching in terms of the instructional issues in their roles and educational setting.  Prerequisite: admission to program or permission of instructor Prerequisites: Admission to MA:C&I program or permission of instructor.

EDUC 695  Capstone Research Project (3, 0) 3updated 001 THIS BECOMES A FALL-ONLY COURSE
