As a University Supervisor for LSSU's Department of Education, I enjoy a unique vantage point from which I can assess the Education Department's efforts.  I see the end result, the education graduates who have completed four years of classroom learning. These men and women have been placed in our local schools under the mentorship of tenured teachers to apply their knowledge in a real-time setting and complete their educational experience. These interns are some of the finest students with whom I have ever had the pleasure to work.  They are exemplary in their knowledge base and admirable in their teaching skills.  Their mentor teachers, with whom they work, are generous with their compliments. Following the completion of their internships, they go on to accept teaching positions and excel at those as well.  School principals recognize the merit of Lake State's educational curriculum, as well as the high quality of its interns, and are ready to hire them as vacancies occur. Many have been placed locally; and it's a pleasure to revisit them in their new "homes" and see for myself what a great teaching job they are doing. These interns have LSSU's Department of Education to thank for their knowledge base. In conclusion, by the evidence of its final product, the interns themselves, LSSU's Education Department is not only getting the job done of providing our community with excellent education graduates, they are doing that job very well, indeed.  Wanda Fabbri - LSSU University Supervisor

NEW: To begin student teaching you must conduct an interview with the LSSU School of Education faculty.  We will use Form F365 to evaluate that interview

Please read carefully the following disclaimer: Your choice of major/minor will affect the locations where you could potentially substitute teach.  For example, if you choose to major in Bilingual Polish you could probably NOT student teach that subject in Brimley Area Schools.  The university will ONLY seek placements which correspond to your teachable subjects.  This means that you must student teach at the levels and in the subject areas that you will ultimately be endorsed in.  The university will TRY to find placements in the geographic region you indicated when you apply for a placement.  For us, "try" means that we will ask the school on your behalf, but it is up to you to do well on the pre-student teaching interview with the principal, and it is up to the district to allow their staff to accept a student teacher.  We cannot guarantee you will be placed, but we will be diligent in trying to secure you a placement.  You can help by presenting a positive professional attitude when you are in the classroom during your pre-student teaching field experiences.  You can build professional relationships with school staff during your pre-student teaching field experiences.  You can have a positive personal attitude where you consistently exceed expectations, you can demonstrate professional competence in all your teaching related roles, and professional discretion in all your informal roles.    Finally, a personal note.  You may have disagreements and take personal issue with the program or our faculty/staff.  Come to us, talk with us, and resolve those issues on a professional basis.  The principals and teachers whom you work with will often assume that if you are a complainer and backbiter now in dealing with the university that you would likely continue that same negative behaviors when dealing with them.  Demonstrate high levels of personal integrity and high standards for your professional behavior.  Dr. Myton.

2005-2006 Student Teaching Handbook & Guidelines for Supervision

  • TE491 has a new document:  F104-a Technology Skills Survey (20 Sep 04)

  • NEW: a revised F130-c Periodic Formal Evaluation is now to be used for formative (if desired), semester and the final intern evaluations.  Please discard versions F130-a or F130-b. (9Sep04)  Interns are advised to review the criteria to ensure they are covering all the mandatory elements of the ELSMT standards.  This form may be used informally for formative assessment, and is required at the end of the 1st semester and for the Formal Final Evaluation.  A rating of "1" should be expected early in the internship for many of the items, so that later the supervisor can indicate your growth in those areas.  Supervisors may use NC (no comment/not observed) for standards during the informal or 1st semester evaluation, but ALL standards must be observed at the minimum stated level by the end of the internship.

  • Interns: Student membership in the NEA/MEA is required to provide you liability insurance as well as other benefits.  Forms will be available at TE480 sessions.

  • Program Completers: "90-day letters"  You must have turned in FORM F200   Application for Initial Provisional Certification to initiate processing of your certificate. The 90-day letter is used to present evidence to an employer that you completed the program and your certification is simply pending issuance by the MDE.  Effective July 1, 2004 all candidates must present an original copy First Aid/CPR certificate (AHA or Red Cross only).

  • Interns: Be sure to have your supervising teacher and mentor teacher talking and working together.   University supervisors should meet jointly with you and the mentor teacher to "de-brief" each observation and to jointly identify areas of accomplishment, areas for further focus, and what has happened between supervisor visits.

  • Please adjust your calendars to reflect these changes. Thank you.
